Nowhere Island Race - Nice Pics

Thanks to Alan and Deo McDine for a great photo of FarrOut in control whilst Rocket is in trouble in the recent Nowhere Island circumnavigation.

Also another nice one from Joan Whyte:

  1. Good to see you got rid off the awful graphics which were on the boat when Billy Foreith had her up in Oban: a garish sight but none the less a fine sight when planing towards Oban Harbour!

There was a spate of L 28 RF 29s in scotland: Flying Fish, owned by someone in NI even made an appearance for refit and cruising, complete with eyes for job leads as original cost saving measure!

I did a few races including half of west highland week on one which I cant remember the name of: came Poole to Clyde and went back there I beleive,

incidentally i have had the priveledge of meeting up with Julian Bethwaite and he was actually the industrial designer on the boat, working for Bruce! It was his first job after Uni.

  2. Nice to hear from you DF. The graphics were gone when we got her, as well as all the bloody spinnaker handling gear and the organisers. The previous owner had tried to convert her to a cruising boat. All that nonsense has stopped now. Still yet to do as well with her as Billy Forteith did...

  3. Hi Jezz

It was actually another L28, can't remember the name, owned By J and F Hunt who did bigger things - winning West Highland Week overall and various clyde races.

Billy did kick butt with his son on kite sheet! Saw her doing 15 knts towards oban Harbour entrance, which can suddenly become narrow if Cal Mac are on their way out.

One year there was a whole flock of L28s and Red Fox 29s at Scottish Series doing really well, the next they were gone!

How many are there in Dorset now Jezz?

  4. There are only two in Dorset. Zorra is in Poole, the owner rescued her from Spain. A few more in the Solent and a few down west. We raced against Red Fox the RF290 in this year's Round the Island - her Mark Mills keel gave her the edge upwind I think. In fact we were only catching her when we flew our ayso against their white sail until we blew the kite up.
What's your opinion on a genoa on the boat? We dropped our rating by getting rid of it.
